In the world of high-value electronics and sensitive field gear, off-the-shelf protection is rarely good enough. When an accessory fails, your entire product’s reputation is at risk.
Tetrafab partnered with ShotKam, a manufacturer of a high-tech video device designed to help competitive shotgun shooters analyze their technique. ShotKam needed more than a standard case; they needed an engineered solution that addressed both protection and unique field functionality.
Here’s how our collaborative design process delivered enhanced equipment protection while keeping the project on time and under budget.
1. The Challenge: Beyond the Bulky Box
ShotKam initially housed its valuable video device and accessories in a generic, large plastic case. As Tetrafab’s Sales Manager Steve Satow explains, this generic solution failed to adequately handle the required cuts and provided a less-than-professional appearance.
The core problem was twofold:
- Protection & Precision: The sensitive camera needed a contoured, precise fit—something a standard plastic box with “cut and pluck” foam couldn’t offer.
- Field Functionality: The camera required a novel solution to keep it warm for optimal operation in cold weather.
2. Solving the Unique Problem with Neoprene
The most ingenious part of this case study involved solving the temperature challenge. ShotKam required a way to keep the video camera warm, which they solved by placing a hand warmer next to the device.
Tetrafab was tasked with building a cradle to secure that hand warmer against the video camera. Our solution was a specialized neoprene pouch with an elastic net and a zipper pocket. This provided a small, secure, and soft-touch enclosure that solved the temperature problem without adding bulk, ensuring the device remains operational when the technician is in the field.
3. The Precision Advantage of Custom EVA
With the accessory challenge solved, we tackled the primary carrying case. We transitioned ShotKam from their generic plastic box to a custom-designed EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) case.
The final case was CAD-engineered to create a precision fit for the camera, cables, and the new neoprene pouch. The result is a specialized, hard-shell case with a soft-touch finish that offers:
- Superior Shock Absorption: EVA’s intrinsic durability protects the delicate video device from impact, vibration, and environmental hazards.
- Optimal Organization: Every component fits securely in its designated area, replacing the messy, bulky chaos of the previous case.
4. Collaborative Design, Measurable Results
For buyers and project coordinators, the Tetrafab process is designed to be highly efficient. Our team utilizes close, creative collaboration to quickly establish brand guidelines and project parameters.
By managing both the specialized neoprene pouch and the primary EVA carrying case, Tetrafab was able to offer a single, unified solution. This single-source approach allowed ShotKam to reduce inventory, streamline their supply chain, and bring the entire project in well under budget.
Finally, the new custom case featured ShotKam’s branding directly on the exterior, turning the carrying solution into a professional extension of their product and enhancing brand recognition in the competition market.
